Senior Scottish Conservatives in Argyll and Bute have warmly welcomed the decision by leader Douglas Ross to no longer support the introduction of tuition fees for students in Scotland.

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron said: 

“Students are currently facing very significant disruption to their education compounded by the prospect of an extremely challenging job market when they graduate.

“Many young people may be hesitating about committing to higher education and there should be no hurdles to them gaining the skills and education they need to fulfil their potential.

“This is exactly the right decision and I applaud Douglas for making it.”

Mr Cameron’s comments were echoed by Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, the Policy Lead for Education on Argyll and Bute Council.

Cllr McNeilly said: “I am so pleased that Douglas is prioritising education and rethinking policy in this way.

“It is so important that we send a clear message to our young people that we are listening to their concerns and taking action.

“I am particularly pleased that the new policy is a permanent commitment and does not just apply to this year’s intake.”
