Highlands and Islands MSP Tim Eagle has intervened in the debate about a new school campus on the Isle of Mull.
Mr Eagle, the Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, has written to the chief executive of Argyll and Bute Council after meeting island residents who are concerned that they are being marginalised in the decision-making process.
Mr Eagle said: “It is difficult to overstate the importance of the new school to the entire island community. It represents a generational opportunity for positive change; one that meets the aspirations of local people for their children. And that’s why I am concerned that so many people seem unhappy about where we are in the process.
“I appreciate that whatever solution is reached may not please everyone but that’s why it’s so important that the process is transparent and inclusive. I think we can all agree that there are a number of factors in play with the school for Mull, such as primary and nursery provision, which make it distinctive. This means that a standard-issue approach may not be appropriate. Decisions must be taken using an islands perspective.
“I very much hope that the decision-makers will heed my message, and that of island residents, so that Mull gets a school that does it justice and of which we can all be proud.”
Argyll and Bute Councillor Amanda Hampsey added: “As a Councillor for Oban South and the Isles, I am delighted that Mull has been selected to receive a much-needed new school campus. With such an opportunity, it is imperative to ensure a full and transparent consultation and engagement process is carried out, to ensure all voices are heard and that decisions made by Councillors are accurately based on the needs and views of local people.
“Our education system is underpinned by GIRFEC “getting it right for every child”, and although we unfortunately will not be able to cater to the wishes of all, we have a duty to ensure that our decisions are sensitive to all, but based on the majority, which can only be ensured by good communication and understanding of island living.”
