The success of two Oban High School students, Archie Malloch and Ruaridh Blackadder, in winning the 2020 Poppyscotland Learning Competition has been highlighted in the Scottish Parliament.
Their winning proposal was inspired by the “Christmas Truce” football match which took place on Christmas Day 1914 between British and German troops.
Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron, who lodged a motion congratulating them on their achievement, said: “I was struck by Archie and Ruaridh’s decision to highlight the Christmas Truce.
“Amid all the carnage that had already taken place, and was to come, the truce symbolised the common humanity of the soldiers who found themselves in the trenches.
“It is heartening to know that our young people continue to remember the enormous sacrifices made by their forebears to defend our liberty and way of life.”
