Humza Yousaf has admitted to getting a basic part of his own Hate Crime Bill and completely wrong. The wording of the proposed law is wider than the SNP Justice Secretary claimed in the press and in Parliament – meaning more people’s words potentially being labelled criminal.
This Bill has already raised concerns about freedom of expression. The range of academics, professionals, faith and advocacy groups lining up against it should force the SNP to think again. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right and should not be eroded in this way.
