Children from one of Scotland’s most remote communities have won parliamentary recognition for their success in winning a fifth Eco-Schools flag.

The Small Isles Primary School, located on Jura, gained the award for the activities of its pupils, which have included setting up recycling stations on the island and testing tap water.

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron submitted a motion to the Scottish Parliament praising the children for their efforts.

He said: “It is very encouraging to see how our younger generations are taking care of their local environment.

“Jura is a special place and it is clear from this latest distinction that the island will remain in very good hands for many years to come.”

Local councillor Alastair Redman (Kintyre and the Islands) added: “The entire community will be very proud of this achievement by its youngest members.

“Let’s hope they can go on to make it a sixth flag in due course!”
