Two local politicians have expressed anger following reports that bottles have been repeatedly smashed at a football pitch at Bowmore on Islay. The pitch is used by the Islay Youth Football Club and on more than one occasion the coaches and team members have arrived to find broken glass and bottles littering the pitch.
Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron said: “I find it absolutely staggering that anyone could act so stupidly as to deliberately smash bottles at a community facility like this. This kind of reckless action is disgraceful. Children deserve to be able to play sport safely.”
Local councillor Alastair Redman (Kintyre and the Islands) added: “It is plain wrong that the organisers should have to spend time carefully checking the pitch to ensure that the players come to no harm from shards of glass.
“The club has appealed to whoever has done this to stop. I really hope that the culprit gets the message and we see no repetition of this deplorable activity.”
