I was happy to be back on Islay again recently to check up on progress being made by our hard working roads and street-lighting teams in improving our island's infrastructure.
The long over due pavement and street-lighting work is being broadly welcomed by local residents in Port Charlotte, especially considering how long it has been since the last time any pavement work has been done in the village.
In Portnahaven there continues to be justifiable complaints from residents on King St about the glare from the street lighting on Shore St. This could be rectified by directing the lights downwards on to the road - where they should be pointing! I have been in contact with our roads department to get this matter rectified.
In Bowmore the rough and crumbling pavements are rapidly becoming nothing more than a series of trip hazards. As part of my role on the council administration I have been pressing for more funding to address this long standing matter.
My constituents on Mansefield Rd in Port Ellen are still pressing for a proper resurfacing job to be done as the pothole repairs are just not lasting. This small road is receiving a large flow of heavy vehicles so it's only fair that it is given some proper attention.
As with so many things at a local council level our roads department's hands are tied by the funding they receive and our council's block grant is regularly cut by the Scottish Government.
Regardless of this, I will continue to do everything I can to get additional resources for the Kintyre and Islands ward's creaking infrastructure.
Cllr Alastair Redman - Kintyre and Islands ward
