Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has said that the cancellation of the Argyllshire Gathering, due to take place this week, and other Highland Games and agricultural shows, has been a significant loss for local communities, but expressed his confidence that they will come back “better than ever.”.
Mr Cameron said: “The Gathering has been, for generations, a very significant event in the calendar of many local people and it will be sorely missed this year.
"Lots of other events have had to cancel, such as the Glenfinnan Games and the Lochaber Agricultural Show to name but a few, which will be a source of disappointment to both visitors and locals alike.
“However, I know many are already thinking about 2021 and coming back bigger and better than ever. That is something we can all look forward to.”
Mr Cameron’s words were echoed by Councillor Raghnall Friseal, an elected member of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council), and a regular contestant in “heavy” events at Highland Games.
“Many of us build our summers around the Games so this year’s cancellations due to Covid 19 has left a very big gap.
“But it’s not just those of us who compete who will miss them, as they provide a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, for local businesses to showcase their products, and for various good causes and charities to seek support.
“However, on the positive side, like Donald I’m already looking forward to 2021 when, hopefully, we can come together and enjoy the best Games ever.”
