I recently had the opportunity to check in on the terrific work being done in Port Askaig to prevent further rock falls.
Following the significant failure that occurred on Sunday 21st January 2018, CAN and Fairhurst were commissioned by Argyll and Bute Council to inspect the rock slope and to recommend to our council remedial measures that could be taken to mitigate the risk of further instability.
The rock slope inspection findings stated that “the individual geological units and structures present on site have specific engineering implications” and a report was produced which presented a series of options which could be considered to mitigate or reduce the risk of any additional rockfall events that may occur.
After considering the report, findings, risk analysis and cost implications, Argyll and Bute Council’s Infrastructure Design Team recommended the Installation of high tensile rockfall containment netting.
This work will hopefully prevent further disruptions to one of Islay's vital ports.
