Hard working local Councillor for the Kintyre and Islands ward, Alastair Redman, has voiced his anger over the proposed closure of the Tarbert, Campbeltown and Inveraray VisitScotland iCentres.
The Tarbert closure is especially troubling since the reason for the closures is a 58% drop in footfall across Scotland, however Tarbert itself has only seen a 10% decrease in footfall. The Tarbert and Skipness Community Trust is in talks to ask for an asset handover and take over the tourist centre building.
Cllr Alastair Redman said:
"I was very angry to hear about the planned closure of the Tarbert, Campbeltown and Inveraray VisitScotland iCentres.
This will not only effect those directly employed at the iCentres but may also have a negative effect on the employment created through local tourism itself.
This sends all the wrong messages at a time when we in Kintyre and the Islands are looking to benefit from the large growth in tourism in Scotland.
With more and more people choosing to have holidays in Great Britain instead of travelling abroad this is certainly a wrongheaded move by VistScotland. I have contacted VistScotland in the past to voice my constituent's deep concerns on this matter and will do so again.
I would support the Tarbert and Skipness Community Trust in their talks to ask for an asset handover and take over the tourist centre building."
